Five fire appliances were dispatched to a farm in Stretton on Wednesday, July 8, after reports of a significant blaze. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire measuring approximately 200 metres by 200 metres, with flames spreading rapidly across the dry field. Firefighters worked to bring the incident under control before successfully extinguishing the blaze.
Station Manager Liam Hickey, who attended the scene, confirmed that the fire is believed to have been started accidentally. He warned that the recent spell of hot, dry weather has left fields and open countryside extremely vulnerable to fire.

"This fire was deemed to have been caused accidentally," he said. "Due to the continued warm weather, the ground is much drier, meaning that fires spread much more quickly."
He also urged members of the public to exercise caution while enjoying the countryside during the summer months.
"I would urge everyone to take extra care in the countryside this summer and help us limit the number of fires in the open area we are called to."
The incident serves as another reminder of the increased wildfire risk across Staffordshire during periods of prolonged warm weather. Emergency services are encouraging people to avoid lighting disposable barbecues, properly dispose of cigarettes, and refrain from leaving glass bottles or litter in rural areas, as even a small spark can quickly ignite dry vegetation.
No injuries were reported, and the fire was successfully contained before it could spread further. Fire crews are continuing to remind residents that preventing accidental fires is vital in helping protect farmland, wildlife, and nearby communities throughout the summer.
