An Indonesian passenger ferry caught fire off the coast of Madura Island on Sunday, leaving at least five people dead and 41 others missing, according to Indonesian search and rescue authorities. The vessel, Mutiara Sentosa 2, was carrying 271 passengers and crew on a scheduled voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the blaze broke out early in the morning. Thick black smoke quickly engulfed the ferry, forcing many passengers to don life jackets and jump into the sea as nearby ships rushed to assist in the rescue operation. Authorities said 225 people had been rescued by Sunday afternoon, while search efforts continued for those still unaccounted for.
