Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has died after being found unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at around 3.12pm on Friday, August 14, following reports of an unresponsive man at the property.

The Metropolitan Police said a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Police said the death is being treated as unexpected but is not currently believed to be suspicious. Officers from the Met's Central South Command Unit are investigating, with a report expected to be prepared for the coroner.

Arday was a professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge and became the university's youngest Black professor when he was appointed in 2023.

He resigned from his Cambridge position on August 5 following a period of intense scrutiny and reports concerning allegations of plagiarism relating to his academic work.

In a statement following his resignation, Arday said the public attention had taken a significant toll on him and those close to him.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation and no cause of death has been announced.
