A major search-and-rescue operation is underway off the coast of Guyana after the passenger ferry MV Barima, carrying 116 people, capsized late Saturday night while traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. The vessel reportedly issued a distress call shortly before it began sinking, prompting an emergency response from the Guyana Defence Force, Coast Guard, and other rescue agencies. Authorities said the ferry was located after crew members fired distress flares, allowing aerial and marine teams to reach the scene.

More than 50 people have been rescued so far, while efforts continue to locate the remaining passengers. Emergency medical teams have been dispatched aboard another government vessel to provide immediate treatment to survivors as they are brought ashore. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the accident, and the search operation remains ongoing amid hopes of finding more survivors.
