Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok signed a constitutional amendment terminating his mandate, effective at midnight on Sunday, following a push by Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s Tisza party to remove institutional holdovers from the previous administration. Parliament Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer will take over as interim president on Monday until a successor is named, with the legislation also enforcing retirement for senior Constitutional Court judges and term limits for lawmakers.

While Sulyok criticized the 17th amendment as a "shameful" abuse of political power that violates the separation of powers, Prime Minister Magyar lauded the changes as a crucial step toward constraining power and ensuring the state serves its citizens. The amendment was passed using the ruling party's two-thirds majority, giving Sulyok a strict deadline to sign or face impeachment.
