Joshua Kerry, the 28-year-old man charged with the murder of former Conservative MP and broadcaster Ann Widdecombe, has appeared in court for the first time following his arrest.

Kerry appeared before magistrates on Tuesday charged with murder after prosecutors authorised the charge earlier this week. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear before the Crown Court at a later date. During the brief hearing, the charge was formally put to the defendant, although no plea was entered. Widdecombe, who died after suffering multiple head injuries in an attack at her London home, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing, including whether there was any political or ideological motive.

The death of the former Cabinet minister and television personality has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, with colleagues describing her as a fearless parliamentarian and outspoken public figure. Detectives say the investigation remains ongoing as officers continue to examine evidence and establish the full circumstances leading up to the attack. Kerry remains in custody ahead of his next court appearance.
