At least 44 people have died after an overcrowded ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba.

The Mbuya Nehanda ferry overturned on Tuesday while travelling from Kariba towards Chalala Fishing Camp after encountering rough conditions.

The vessel was designed to carry around 90 people, but more than 100 passengers and crew were reportedly aboard. Survivors said waves began flooding the ferry before it overturned.

Rescue teams, including boats and helicopters, are continuing to search the lake for survivors and those still missing. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
