Liverpool threw away another two-goal lead as Monaco fought back in a dramatic pre-season friendly at Anfield, leaving Andoni Iraola to suffer defeat in his first game at the famous stadium. The Reds looked to be cruising after taking a 2-0 advantage, but once again they failed to close the game out. Monaco capitalised on Liverpool’s defensive lapses and produced an impressive comeback to turn a promising afternoon into a frustrating one for the home side.
Although the result came in pre-season and should not be overanalysed, the manner of the collapse will still concern Iraola. Losing another two-goal lead highlighted issues with game management and defensive concentration, while Monaco’s response showed how quickly Liverpool’s control can disappear. For Iraola, it was certainly not the Anfield introduction he would have wanted, even if the friendly provided valuable preparation ahead of the new campaign.
