A Greater Anglia passenger train has derailed near Wickford in Essex, causing major disruption to rail services between Wickford and Southend Victoria.

The incident happened at around 2.12pm on Friday, 14 August 2026, near Wickford railway station.

British Transport Police said the rear carriages of the train had come off the tracks but remained upright. Police officers attended the scene alongside paramedics and firefighters.

At the time of reporting, no injuries had been reported.

National Rail said all lines between Wickford and Southend Victoria were blocked while emergency teams responded to the incident. Passengers were warned that significant disruption could continue while the situation was investigated.

Greater Anglia services between London Liverpool Street and Southend Victoria have been affected, with passengers advised to check before travelling and consider alternative arrangements.

Network Rail said it was dealing with a derailment incident in the Anglia region and was working to establish what had happened and provide assistance.

The cause of the derailment has not yet been confirmed. Investigations are expected to examine the condition of the track, the train and other railway infrastructure.

The Essex derailment comes less than 24 hours after a separate and more serious train derailment near Lewes in East Sussex, where passengers were injured after several carriages left the track.

The two incidents have occurred during a period of very high temperatures across parts of the UK. However, authorities have not confirmed that the hot weather was responsible for the Wickford incident.
